On the Couch with Naturals: Alicia Hutchinson

Hello all! I wanted to interview the lovely Alicia. She is a beautiful natural with styles that I adore. I hope that you gain inspiration from her styles :) You can check out here blog here. She has also been featured on this blog, here , here and here

1. Describe your hair type. What kind of challenges do you face with your texture? What do you do to combat these challenges?
I have type 4c hair [see naturallycurly.com for hair typing]. My biggest challenge is dryness. My hair gets dry very quickly so I have to constantly moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!

2. Tell us about your hair regimen. How often do you wash and condition? What are some of your favorite styles?
I wash and condition my hair about once a month and cowash about every week. I moisturize daily and I try to oil daily [but sometimes I don't]. I usually keep my hair in twists. In between twisting my hair I rock updos and the occasional twist out. And those are my absolute favorite styles: updos and mini twists!

3. Have you ever felt insecure about your hair? What did you do to remedy the insecurities?
I've felt insecure on bad hair days. Those times when your hair just isn’t looking right. sigh. Those are times I remind myself that I am not my hair.

4. We love your styles! They are so unique and fun. Where do you get the inspiration for them?
Most of the time I just play around with my hair and come up with styles. Sometimes I find pictures of styles and use that as inspiration to recreate my own version. Pins are my best friend. Seriously. I just pin things in place and styles are created.

5. Do you have favorite go to styles? What are they?
I love to keep my hair in twists. Its just so easy. I don't have to waste time styling in the morning if I don't want to. I can get up and go. Or if i want to I can pin it up or do a bantu knot with them. They're so versatile.
if my hair isn't twisted and I need to do something with it, I'll whip up an updo! I love udos with humps, bumps, poofs, and french rolls. LOVE LOVE LOVE updo hairstyles.

6. If you were going on a trip and could only take 5 products. What would they be and why?
Garnier Fructis leave in conditioner
Garnier Fortifying Conditioner
Garnier Fructis Shampoo
Hair pins
Oil (i like to blend olive, coconut, shea butter, jojoba, and a drop of peppermint)

7. What are your hair goals? Do you have any length goals?
I'm working on getting to bra strap length!

8. You shared with us that you have been natural and have never relaxed your hair. Was there every a point in time that your hair suffered damage? What was your solution?
Yes. My hair has been heat damaged several times from flat ironing. I didn't really do anything to combat this. I just kept on with my routine until the heat damaged ends eventually fell off.

9. If you were to give encouragement to other natural ladies reading this, what would it be?
Love your hair! Stop comparing it to others. Stop believing that your hair is too "nappy" to wear out or style. Be free. Be confident. Love you!
